A very likely cause of the engine failure is the carburetor icing up after having flown through the storm. The wind speed and temperature at altitude? can easily form ice, choking the engine of air. The pilot could have forgotten to turn on carb heat, which routes a small amount of hot exhaust gas back through the intake to melt any ice. Simple and easy mistake, especially if he was distracted by the storm.

coralangel, you have to understand that flying hundreds of feet over the ocean, all? you can see is ocean. Seeing a single person, even three people in bright orange life jackets, is an almost impossible feat without some sort of GPS signal from a sinking ship.

man that was some swim jens did. 12hrs straight pretty much.it was good he had? the flippers too. its strange that the helicopter when it saw them didn’t throw down any life raft or give any indication that they saw them and just flew off to tell the navy where to go like. all of these story just stress the important of having proper emergency equipement
